01 PART TIME SHELTER SUPPORT WORKER

Temporary part time position

Job objectives: 

Under the supervision of Technical Coordinator, the shelter support worker provides direct support to the guests of the shelter and facilitate day to day communal living among guests. He/she will demonstrate professionalism, humility and deeper understanding of the needs of guests in the shelter as well as the safety of the shelter and its environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive and admit guests according to designated intake procedures.
  • Maintain an effective communication tool and record of guests’ activities to ensure effective service delivery by documenting information/observations/impressions which may affect a guest’s case plan. 
  • Assess and assist with guest personal needs e.g., hygiene, nutrition, medical, and/or emotional.
  • Provide orientation to new shelter guests by giving a tour of the facility, reviewing the guest program manual, informing and encouraging the use of the services available in the shelter.
  • Support a harm reduction model in the community.
  • Communicate effectively with guests including active listening and problem-solving around barriers and /or recommendation to appropriate community resources to address guests needs.
  • Monitor guests’ activities and provide effective intervention in crisis situations.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with other staff, volunteers, & guests e.g., assist with meals distribution, assist janitors, assist with dorms cleaning.
  • Execute Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A diploma, degree or certificate in a related field such as human services, addictions counselling, personal support worker, social worker or equivalent combination of education and/or experience is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills specifically in conflict resolution and nonviolent crisis intervention.
  • Capacity and/or experience working in a shelter environment is preferred;
  • Knowledge of harm reduction, community service agencies and the homeless population are assets.
  • Ability:
    • To use professional judgement and problem solve;
    • To perform duties with minimal supervision;
    • To establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents, staff, community agencies and the public;
    • To work overtime and take on-call shift as required.
  • Training:
    • Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS)
    • Workplace Standard First Aid and CPR C
    • Trauma informed care
    • Harm reduction (Substance use and overdose)
    • Crisis Prevention and Verbal De-escalation

Schedule

  • 8 hours shift during week day, week end and holidays
  • Flexibility and availability for any shift :
    • Day shift - 7:00 a.m. à 3:00 p.m.
    • Evening shift - 3:00 p.m. à 11:00 p.m.
    • Night Shift - 11:00 p.m. to 07:00 a.m.
